Mountain Bike Skills Assessment

We want to ensure that you are ready and fit for this experience which is why we put together a little system to rate yourself!  

Our Downhill trips call for Advanced to Pro riders who love downhill steep, fast, technical terrain. (Mascota, Colombia, and Peru)

And the Cross-country Trips call for Strong Intermediate to Advanced + Riders! (Oaxaca & Spain)

As with any sport, there will always be more fit or skilled riders, and of course; there will always be the opposite, within reason of course in a similarly skilled group of riders.  We ask our riders to be aware and to understand that our adventures are designed as a group ride, not a race, or a privately guided experience.

The nature of our trips are about coming together as women and celebrating each other’s strengths and helping each other through our struggles.  Being on bikes together… is just that!  There will be challenging times/days like anything in life; and we are there to support each other and have fun!  There is no competition or need to prove yourself to be anything other than you are in whatever condition you find yourself to be in at any moment throughout the trip;  on or off the bike, in or out of the city and on or off your yoga mat!

Please read the guide carefully to make sure this ride matches your skill and fitness level prior to booking your trip!  You certainly don’t have to be an expert or a pro, but we want to make sure you are at a level that will allow you to enjoy your experience and have the trip of your life!

SKILL LEVEL

If you are anywhere between a 4 and 7, you are ready for a trip with us!  If you are at a 3, start pushing yourself NOW to get yourself to a 4 and you will be more confident to adventure with us! 

 SKILL LEVEL 1 – NOVICE

  • You are new to biking
  • You have no experience with off-road (single-track) mountain biking
  • You may have done some road riding
  • You prefer to ride on pavement

SKILL LEVEL 2 – BEGINNER

  • You have been mountain biking for about 1 year or so…
  • You really enjoy it but are hesitant getting on terrain beyond the beginner level (smooth roads/wide paths)
  • You know how to use your gears and brakes properly but when the terrain gets a little technical, you have to get off your bike and walk
  • You can handle smooth single-track with rolling terrain

SKILL LEVEL 3 – INTERMEDIATE

  • You’ve been mountain biking for at least 1 year or have decent general riding skills and are in good physical condition
  • You’re capable and confident controlling bike speed and direction on moderate single-track
  • You ride at least 12-16 times/month
  • You like to push yourself and are ready to advance!

SKILL LEVEL 4 – STRONG INTERMEDIATE

  • You’ve been mountain biking for about 2-3 years, and have solid intermediate skills
  • You can handle rugged terrain, have good sense of control or your brakes and know how to shift gears and anticipate the changing terrain
  • You can handle terrain that is slightly technical, with smaller rocks and roots and can climb on single-track as long as it is not too technical
  • You ride at least 16-20 times/month

SKILL LEVEL 5 – ADVANCED

  • You’ve been mountain biking for at least 3-4 years and are very confident in all aspects of mountain biking
  • You can handle most technical terrain, include rocky and root trails, along with features such as switchbacks, medium logs, and low-level obstacles such as bridges
  • You’re comfortable with most advanced level trails (although you may walk a few sections)
  • You ride at least 16-24 times/month or more

 SKILL LEVEL 6 – EXPERT

  • You have been mountain biking for over 5 years and are confident riding all types of terrain and distances
  • You ride as often as possible and can handle technical terrain and medium-level stunts, such as large log rollovers and small bridges
  • You can descend steeps, and climb technical single-track
  • You may have done competition for either aggressive XC or Enduro
  • You ride at least 4-24 times/month or more

SKILL LEVEL 7 – PRO

  • You have been recently, or are currently competing in either XC or Enduro
  • Enough said, you are a badass!
  • Your life is riding!

FITNESS LEVELS

If you are anywhere between a 3 and 5, you are set to experience an incredible adventure with us!  If you are a 1 or 2, start training now!  You can do it!

 LEVEL 1

  • You are somewhat of a couch potato
  • Even small climbs are challenging and you have to get off and walk
  • You can’t ride for an hour on flat terrain for the whole duration
  • You maybe exercise 2 days a week

LEVEL 2

  • You have an average level of fitness and are capable of riding 2-3 hours a day at a nice and easy pace
  • You can handle one or two easy climbs of up to 800 feet
  • You exercise 3 days a week for a minimum of 45 minutes

 LEVEL 3

  • You are capable of riding 4-5 hours a day at a moderate pace (with breaks)
  • You can handle one or two climbs a day up to a total of 1,300 feet
  • You exercise regularly at least 3-4 days a week for at least an hour

LEVEL 4

  • You can ride 5-6 hours a day at a moderate pace (with breaks)
  • You can handle two or three climbs of up to a total of 2,000 feet in a day
  • You exercise at least 4 days a week (or more) for an hour

LEVEL 5

  • You can ride up to 8 hours a day, and tackle almost any climb the mountain throws at you
  • You can handle sustained climbs of up to a total of 4,000 feet and up to 2 hours (with breaks)
  • You train regularly for endurance events
